Caribou Lake Home Remodel

Project Story

This client approached Wagner Zaun Architects (Doug Zahn) in 2014 for repair & renovations to their lake-front 1997 timber framed home on Caribou Lake. Doug in turn invited J&R Sundberg to contract the work directly with the client. This home was in need of a new roof, skylights, siding, Screen Porch & Deck rework and some interior remodeling – mainly Master Bath and Basement Bedrooms & Baths. Initially, the improvements were intended for their own enjoyment but then their plans changed. They decided to move to Portland, Oregon for personal reasons. Not wanting to sell – they decided to use the property as a vacation rental and to be able to come back and have a place –especially in the summer. Besides residing (very colorful and appealing) & reroofing the house – other exteriorenhancements included expanding the 3-Season porch and rebuilding a large cedar deck fitted with glass railings to not compromise the view of the lake. Additionally – an attractive wood-look composite fence was built to replace a deteriorated wood fence around the front of the property.

The basement remodeling entailed adding a Sauna where one was originally intended and redoing a bathroom adjacent to the sauna. Additionally, fixtures in a 2nd basement bathroom were upgraded and wainscot paneling was reworked to match in with what had originally been done besides adding a length of timber bar from wood salvaged from the former fence. The Master Bath received a new soaker tub with surrounding tilework in a playful pebbled beach theme, a new wave style vanity sink and retiling of the Master walk-in shower. The finished project is a definite “Wow!” experience and is beyond what one would expect for a vacation rental.
